13th - 15th November 2006 - ".. they too were against"
A conference on unappreciated anti-Nazi fighters
On 13 to 15 November 2006, an international conference called "They too were against" was held in Ústí nad Labem. The Conference was part of the outputs of the project "Documenting the destinies of the active anti-Nazis who were affected by the measures taken against so-called enemy population in the post-war Czechoslovakia". The project is being realized by the National Archives, the Institute of Contemporary History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Museum of Ústí nad Labem.
The aim of the Conference was to create space for summarizing the outcomes of the research done so far and to open the discussion on methodological issues. One of the central themes that the researchers will keep concentrating on definitely is the issue of the relationship between an individual and a totalitarian regime in the history of Central Europe. Attention will definitely be paid to the following questions:
Who were German antifascists in the 1930's? What were their situations in the annexed borderland? How did their antifascist exile develop?
The agenda of the Conference was mainly based on papers devoted to the individual destinies of German and other nationality antifascists after 1945, their legal status, and its gradual changes.
The Conference has opened the door for international comparisons of the research results including detailed information on the integration of resettled German antifascists.
